The Runners
We are everywhere. Every continent and every country. All shapes and sizes. Young and old and every age in between. We are united by one common thread, we are runners.
Some have been running since childhood. Others took it up late in life. Still others played sports and ran throughout their teens and maybe even twenties but then somewhere along the way got sidetracked by life and only took it up again many years or even decades later. Each and every one, we are runners.
Our reasons for running are as varied as we are. For some it is something they do simply because they love running. For others it was a way to get their weight under control. There are those for whom it was a way to get back into shape after what was basically years of a mostly sedentary lifestyle. Some run for the health benefits. Others started on a dare from a friend. The reasons really do not matter because one and all, we are runners.
We are a friendly bunch. At events there are no strangers. Language is no barrier. Need a helping hand and there will be several to be found simply by asking, sometimes it does not even require words to be spoken. If we see another runner in need we help if we can. It is simply the way operate. We are runners.
Some of us like running the roads best. Others prefer to be out on trails. Still others like running the oval track round and round. There are even those who prefer a treadmill. It does not matter, no one place is better than another, just different. We do not knock others for their preferences because we understand; we are runners.
For some people speed is king. Distance is the goal of others. No matter to us runners, you will be hard pressed to find one of us making fun of anyone else who is out there because one and all, we are runners.
Early morning, mid afternoon, evening and even late night you will find us out there doing our thing. Hot or cold it does not matter. We may not like it as much at one extreme or the other but run we will because it is what we do, what we love, for we are runners.
Our friends have learned, ask us about running and you will get an answer. Probably longer than they like. We invite friends and strangers alike to join us for a run, or two, or ten. We enjoy our sport and our accomplishments and think everyone should join us. We might even have a little trouble understanding the lost souls who do not share our passion. We are runners.
So go out and run. After all you are a runner.

October 31, 2012Nice Travis. I like the “We invite our friends….” bit. I do that and know the answer I’ll get but I ask anyway. Who knows, maybe they’ll be converted after being sedentary for years. We are runners.

November 1, 2012Simply stated and professionally written! This is one reason running saved my life, and still another reason that I love running. People start to run and I really don’t know, but somehow magically find out who the truly beautiful people on this Earth are and wonder why they never knew this before, it’s kinda like finding your God or if you prefer your higher power.
