What Type Are You?

The controversy rages on. People are choosing sides and if you are of a different type you are the enemy. Okay, not really but now that I have your attention please read on.

What type of athlete are you? A “get it done early in the morning” type or an “I’ll do it in the evening” type? There is no right or wrong answer, just personal preference and the proponents of either can list a myriad of benefits to doing it their way.

I have done both and I can tell you without a second thought that my preference is evenings. I have something to look forward to all day long.  It is a great way to relieve and burn off stress from the day. There is no time pressure to get done because I have to get ready for work or school. I can sleep in on my days off, and I do enjoy sleeping in,  unless I choose to do otherwise. I can enjoy beautiful sunsets and always have a great excuse for not getting my yard work done. When I travel out of town on business it also works well to keep me out of the bars.

Morning runners on the other hand have alarm clocks waking them up at awful hours. They go to bed earlier because they are getting up so early. Sometimes they have to cut things short because they have to leave for work. Usually they have not even enjoyed the first cup of coffee before they are out the door, I mean really, can you imagine?!

One benefit of morning running is the beautiful sunrises you can enjoy while outside. Of course, if I am up I can enjoy one from my front porch with a nice cup of coffee in my hands. Or if it happens to be my weekend long run I am usually seeing the sunrise from wherever I happen to be running which is a nice change of scenery fro my front porch.

Okay morning people, fire back with your comments below and let me know how wrong or misguided I am.

I’m neither. I’m not a morning person, I like to sleep in. And I know that if I try and do a good workout late in the day that I’m tired, and hungry (or full) – so my goal is to split the difference. Get out at lunch time or late in the morning. It breaks up my day and I can enjoy my run when I know I have more ambition and energy.

Travis, I am an avid morning trainer always have been. I am naturally a morning person. So I love the crisp morning air, it changes the flow of my day tremendously. My wife on the other hand is an afternoon/evening runner.

I’m with you Travis, after work is my time. I bring my gear to work and I go right to the trails as soon as I’m done. This also helps me get my training in, even when I don’t want to. I’m already out with my gear, why not get it done. Besides I have to be at work at 6:00 AM most days, that means that I would have to get up at WAY TOO FRIGGIN EARLY.

During the week, I am an after work runner. Always have been. I need my sleep during the week and the thought of a rushed workout at the crack of dawn stresses me out. However, on the weekends I love doing my long run early! I like getting out there just after sunrise. I don’t feel pressure to get it done quickly and I can just enjoy. Also, I am a big fan of having the rest of the day to just chill. Drink some coffee, make some pancakes. All that good stuff :)

Glad to see the responses. My long runs on the weekend are usually early runs beginning sometime between 4-8 am depending on how long I think it will take. Once a week is more than enough for me.

I used to be an evening workout person but no longer. Mornings are better for me or else I will usually bag the training!
