What do you eat? Try some Nutrient 5.

I consider myself healthy. I run, I hike, I bike, I stay active. The United States is currently facing an out of control obesity rate with some experts suggesting we are closing in on sixty-six percent of our population being overweight. Over the last few years I have really attempted to eat healthy, with my fast metabolism I have always been able to eat what I wanted and not gain a pound. That sounds amazing, right? Well yes it is. Although, no matter how fast metabolism is a person should still watch their intake of certain foods. As I tell my nine year old son, your body is a car that will only run if you fuel it properly. Lets face it, some foods are just garbage. Mcdonald’s, Burger King, Donuts, Cake, brownies, Stabucks Mocha Frappe Latte; all of these foods may be easy, tasty, but generally overall are on my list of places to avoid. Well minus Starbucks because how bad can a $8 cup of coffee be.

In all seriousness I attempt to eat more fruit, vegetables, organic products and less red meat. I occasionally stray but generally eat better than most. My nutritional discipline is decent, I do tend to convince myself after a long run that a Mountain Dew is earned. This week my article isn’t about my eating habits or yours. It is about a soldier who works for me, his name is Richard Marcano and he is one of the most disciplined fit soldiers I have met in ten years. Marcano is so disciplined he makes his on food which he has named Nutrient 5, it is a mixture of protein powder and organic food. His results are hard to argue with, he completes over 100 pushups and 100 situps in two minutes and runs five miles in 33 minutes. He also rucks over 30 miles a week. In an Army unit that prides itself on physical fitness he is by far above the average. Last week I asked Marcano to do a write up for me describing Nutrient 5. Below is his write up, I welcome all comments and ideas.

“My name is Richard Marcano and last week SSG Swink approached me and asked if I would briefly describe Nutrient 5 for his blog. Here is the best way I can describe it. The body needs nutrients specifically: carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats and vitamins and minerals. In nutrient 5 these nutrients are gathered together on a flexible platform. I get the carbohydrates from whole grain usually quinoa, in flour form and also from oats. The protein, I get from a lean protein powder and mixed nuts. I add chia seed powder for healthy fats. Spirulina, raw bee pollen and maca powder I add as additional along with dried fruits. I collect the items in a bowl add water, mix around. The items are interchangeable, for example the types of nuts and dried fruits or flaxseed meal in place of chia seed. I can also vary the amount of my carb intake depending on the days activities. Nutrient 5 has proven itself beneficial in my active lifestyle it provides me with a worry free nutritious fuel. I intake three ziplock bags of N5 daily ensuring I intake the proper amount of each nutrients dependent on my daily exercise routine.”

Marcano eats a powdered form of food for every meal, the level of discipline he has in his diet is amazing and beyond what most people attempt. I do not have the ability to spend $600 a month on my personal diet nor do most people but we all have choices. The overall point of this post was to bring attention to Marcano’s diet and see if anyone else knows of someone who has a diet like this.

That is seriously impressive! I am all for nutrition and eating well. I also choose to spend a good chunk of money on food as I think it is a great investment. I always say…you can spend a little more money now on nutritious, whole foods or you can spend a lot of money later on hospital bills, medication, etc. We have to treat our bodies right :)
