Staying Fit on Vacation

Summer is definately well upon us and with that brings many challenges to maintaining your fitness and training regimen. No matter what sport you find yourself called to, it is the same for each of us during these 3-4 months of summer time. Obviously the heat can force you to alter your training, maybe move your plans inside or simply push back the alarm clock a tad and greet the sunrise.

There are definetly a number of barriers to maintaining your summer training, you might not even have a upcoming event scheduled but you don’t want to lose what progress you have gained. However with summer time typically comes that word that we all enjoy from time to time “vacation”. Yes finally a moment in the year that we can step away from the office, the phone, the computer, the meetings, the responsibilities of everyday life. Yet vacation can definately change your training goals for the year if you don’t approach it with a plan to stay on task.

A beautiful lake, I was able to do some open water swimming in. Munroe Falls, OH.

My family and I recently went on vacation to northern Ohio to visit my brother and his family. First of all it was a great opportunity for us to get away and enjoy some personal time together as a close family, and I mean close (we literally all slept in the same room). Anyways the weather in Ohio right now is beautiful, mid 80′s during the day and 60′s in the evening. A runner’s paradise. Fortunately my brother knows how important training is to me and had already gathered  for me some options to stay on task while we were in town.

Multiple days my wife and I would head out the door and enjoy a solid 5K together. We even cycled a few days as well. I am a firm believer that the best way to discover a new town is on foot or bike. The area we were in was Akron/Cuyahoga Falls. I want to give big props to their City Parks & Rec department. There were multiple parks for us to choose that we could run trails in. Beautiful parks at that, which provided us a great workout and a peaceful experience. My brother, being a local physician, was able to pull a few strings and got me into this incredible workout facility so I could swim some laps.

I know it is easy to get in the mindset that vacation is a time to allow my mind to rest. Yes that should be the goal of your vacation because life can weigh on us very much. But I believe that vacation can also be very therapeutic if you plan according and stick with your training schedule. Also, it is very exciting and adventurous to explore to trails, roadways, paths, and facilities while on vacation.

I say all this to encourage you to plan ahead while on vacation. Plan your workouts so you can still enjoy your vacation. Look up facilities that are in the area that you and your family can enjoy. However don’t let your workout schedule control your vacation.

Hope you have a great Summer Vacationa and would love to hear your experiences while on the road!!!

I agree the best way to view a vacation spot is running or riding your bike! You really get to know a place that way and don’t miss any of the details.

Just came back from vacationing in northern Washington. We made sure to do some trail runs and added some hiking in as well … we made it part of the plan. If you’ve ever been to Seattle then you know that just walking up and down the streets is a major calf workout in itself!
