Keeping it fun

Have you ever felt like just throwing in the towel? You just do not want to train anymore? Found yourself just going through the motions instead of training and enjoying it? Then you might need to step back and look at what you have been doing, why you have been doing it, and most importantly, what you can change to bring the fun back into your routine.

If you are training hard then perhaps it is time to ease back a little and do some easier routines. If you have been taking it easy maybe you need to challenge yourself with a little more intensity in your workouts. We need change and our minds as well as our bodies thrive on it.

Have you been training for a specific goal? Sometimes a goal is all we need to keep us going, motivated, and having fun. A lot of people I have spoken to find this to be true, they train better and have more fun when they have a goal such as hitting a specific time in an event or simply reaching a new distance milestone by a specific date.

However for some others the opposite is true, they are constantly training for an event and have no time to enjoy themselves doing what they love because of their highly competitive nature. For these people clearing the calendar and just going out for the joy of it can provide the solution they are looking for.

Maybe new training partners or a new location can do the trick. Perhaps you need to look at the type of events you have been entering and find one or two in which fun is the focus of the entire event. Enter an untimed event. A night time trail event. A costumed or themed event.   Go find something out of your comfort zone and take it on. Try a new discipline that requires a different focus in training.

Sometimes a change is what we need. Something fresh to keep us focused but most importantly, something to keep us having fun.
