Fat Tire Festival 2012

Next to Tulsa Tough, I would say this is the second most fun event of the season.  Fat Tire Festival is located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the heart of the Ozarks.  It is a series of 4 events (5 if you include the beer relay.  I do.)  You can do 1, 2 or all of the events.  I choose to do 3.  The short track, followed by the beer relay, (Go Team Soundpony!), and the cross country race on Sunday.  I was stoked this year to have a Specialized Epic 29er to race on.  Last year, I had a 26 in. hard tail that always beat the snot out of me.  The race director made the Cat 1 women race with the Cat 1 men for the short track event.  Yikes!  I was not happy about that.  My goal was not to be lapped more than once by my boyfriend, Ronnie, and not lapped more than twice by pro rider Bryan Fawley.  As I was racing, I saw ahead of me a fatigued looking teammate of mine from Team Soundpony, KC.  I decided to make him my carrot.  Every lap I raced by our cheering squad from Tulsa, I heard “Go KC!  Don’t let Jane get you!”  Not less than 8 seconds, I would go by and hear “Go Jane!  Pass KC!”  I eventually did pass KC on the lap that I heard someone yell, “Go get him Jane!  I’ve got money on this!”  The race was 20 minutes + 2 laps, making it about 25 minutes for me.  I was only lapped once by both Ronnie and Bryan, and I ended up winning the event for the women.  Sunday was the cross country course.  This really is one of the most pretty mountain bike courses there is.  I am a weenie when it comes to going down rocks and roots and drops, so I was impressed with myself when I only had to get off my bike once to walk down some deathly looking rocks.  Overall Tulsa had a fantastic contingency and was well represented in all categories.
