A Natural Way to Recover

Posted by on Jun 14, 2012 in Nutrition, Recovery, Running | 6 Comments

As I have discussed in previous posts, I am passionate about nutrition and eating right. I firmly believe that what we eat has a huge effect on our performance as athletes and on our general quality of life. There are tons of products and supplements out there intended to make us stronger, faster runners. They are apparently full of magical ingredients that will make us the best athletes ever, right? Riiiight. In all honesty, the products that seem to work the best are the ones comprised of ingredients that grow naturally right in here on our very own planet. Legit, real foods. However, actually finding a product such as this can be a challenge. Fortunately for me, the wonderful people over at Vega sent me all sorts of goodies to use in my training and racing. I am definitely a fan and knew that you all would be too.

Vega makes all sorts of amazing things like whole food energy bars, smoothies, and much, much more. It was created by an Ironman triathlete who knows his stuff, especially when it comes to fueling properly before, during, and after endurance events. Everything is plant based and the ingredient list is full of words I know and can understand. Perfect.

I really enjoy the energizing smoothies and like to whip one up after a long run or workout. It has 10g of protein, 5g of fiber, and 2 servings of veggies. I mix mine with a handful of frozen fruit (mangoes and strawberries in this picture), some skim milk (to make it creamy and to bulk up the protein), and a spoonful of peanut butter. Not only are you getting in your protein to aide in recovery, but you’re also taking in veggies and fiber at the same time.

I love sharing what I have learned when it comes to performance nutrition and healthy eating in general. I hope you have found this helpful and let me know if you’d like to keep seeing posts like this in the future!

Do you prefer to fuel up and recover with natural products? If so, which ones?

My diet could definitely be cleaned up. That said I love Clif bars, especially the peanut butter crunch. All natural, protein, fiber and carbs so they are great while running or after. I also love 2% milk with a scoop of 20% protein soy powder post workout.
I checked out the website but have a question; how many servings do you get out of a pouch, is it single or multiple?

The energizing smoothies come in single pouches with one serving. However, their Vega One nutritional shakes are great too and come in tubs with multiple servings. Also, there Vega Sport line comes in tubs with multiple servings and is prefect for endurance athletes like us, especially while training and racing!
