I agree. Recovery is Crucial

I’m going to jump on the Recovery Train with Brandon.

While I have never tried the Icebath, I am a firm believer in taking in the proper nutrients, vitamins, and minerals after a workout or event.  This is an absolute must.

Now I’m not a nutritionist by any means.  I like my drink on the weekends, and engorging myself occasionally on nasty fast food, especially after a race.  It’s my real reward for a job well done.

To get back on point, I learned about recovery from an amazing athlete, Hobie Call, a marathon runner and Guinness record holder, and of course the most winningest (I know it’s not a real word) SPARTAN racer, ever.  Protein is the most crucial nutrient you can give your body after a workout or event.

The most crucial time?  15-30 minutes after you have beat your body up and pushed the limits, your body will actually start to eat itself to get the nutrients it needs.  This will make progressing in your sport take longer and your recovery time longer.  I notice the difference immediately the next morning if I miss a recovery drink after a workout.  I will feel fatigued and achy.  Typically the morning after  a workout, if I have had my recovery drink, I’m ready for to go.

You can also add other nutrients, minerals, etc. to your drink.  Per Hobie’s recipe, I mix Creatine, vitamins C and E, and Raw Honey with my protein shake.  Creatine helps the muscles heal quicker, to get ready for the next session.   While your body is recovering from the workout, your immune system is in a weakened state, Vitamins C and E should keep you from getting sick.  And the Honey is a good source of carbs.  I’ve been using Hobie’s recipe for some time now, and I’m going to experiment with some extra nutrients in the near future.  I’ll let you know how that goes.

In the end, do your own research and find out what works for you.  We weren’t all built the same.   Good Luck Everyone.

“In the end, do your own research and find out what works for you. We weren’t all built the same.” That’s so true. Finding what works can be a challenge. After finding it, tweaks may need to be done, but at least you know where to begin.
